Field Specialist

Hours: 40 hours  M-F
Minimum Requirements: Bachelors degree (B.A. or B.S.) in biology, entomology or related field from a four year college or university with a minimum of one to two years related experience and/or training. Must possess a valid Florida driver license and maintain insurability.
Responsibilities: Primary support for the Permit Compliance Specialist. Will provide back-up support for the Mosquito Programs Coordinator. Involved in the collection and analysis of data in support of one or both programs. Mosquito Surveillance Program: setting and retrieval of mosquito traps; larval sampling, count, identify and pool mosquitos using compound and dissecting microscopes; dissect mosquitos; collect and record data  weather, mosquito, rainfall, etc.; bleed sentinel chickens and prepare blood samples for testing; clean and maintain chicken cages and holding pen (water, feed, clean up sand, etc.); proficient in computer software (Excel, Access, Microsoft Word, Power Point, Outlook); collects, records and analyzes data; compares current data to historical database for determining trends and/or other situations.
Permit Compliance Program: monitors construction related field activities for compliance as related to the MS4 and the SFWMD permits and District waters and report out of compliance issues directly to the Compliance Specialist; monitors and reports storm water ponds and canals; aids in the determination of wetland jurisdictional lines; collects and analyzes biological; collects and maps MS4 System through the use of GPS, inspects MS4 System; aids in the collection of hydrilla/aquatic plant surveys; gathers data and submits preparation in support of the annual reporting for the NPDES MS4 permit; inspects illicit discharges and improper disposal and reports to Compliance Specialist; interfaces with external consultants, Walt Disney World, state and federal agencies under the approval of the Compliance Specialist.
Physical Requirements: Regularly required to stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Required to sit, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Must be able to lift and carry 40 to 60 pounds (50 lb. feed bags, 40 lb. water jugs, 40 lb. CO2 cylinders, batteries for mosquito traps, etc.). Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and distance vision, color and peripheral vision, depth vision and the ability to adjust focus.

The employee is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles, outside weather conditions, and extreme heat. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate. Environmental Services Technical Assistant - Intern

Hours: Not to exceed 40 hours per week  M-F
Minimum Requirements: Completion of two years of college, declared major or course work in the physical or natural sciences. Must possess a current/valid Florida driver license and maintain insurability under the District commercial automobile coverage.
Responsibilities: Collects and analyzes water samples using proper equipment and procedures. Measures and analyzes water samples using proper equipment and procedures. Measures physical and chemical parameters of water quality with field and laboratory equipment. Uses computer and Laboratory Information Management System in areas related to assigned tasks. Records data and test results. Uses technical equipment including GPS and field computers, records and utilizes data in departments and GIS database. Assist Quality Assurance with duties including filing and sorting of paperwork, cataloging paperwork and developing/using NELAC compliant record keeping system. Assists all sections as needed including sample prep, analysis, disposal, and cleaning. Assists department management on special projects.
Physical Requirements: Regularly required to use hands to finger, handle, or feel: reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. Required to stand, walk, climb or balance, and stoop, kneel or crawl. Routinely required to sit. Must be able to lift and/or move up to fifty pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. Must be able to balance in a small boat and is comfortable around water and able to swim.
Work Envrionment: Regular exposure to wet and/or humid conditions and outside weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate, but occasionally extreme. Exposure to wet and humid conditions, outside weather conditions and the use of chemicals. The use of safety equipment is required. Exposure to dust from paper.
Salary: Hourly rate is $15.25 per hour. Temporary assignment without benefits.
