HOURS:                                   40 Hours per week

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid State of Florida Driver’s License and maintain insurability under the District’s commercial vehicle coverage.
  • Must possess and maintain a State of Florida Fire Safety Inspector I
  • Must possess Certified Fire Plans Examiner certification by NFPA, ICC, or similar fire plans examiner certification. ProBoard certification will not be considered as equivalent.
  • Four to five years’ experience as a fire department plans examiner is required. Two years of specialized experience in evaluating, drafting, or designing fire protection or life safety plans may be substituted for each year of required experience.
  • Five years’ experience utilizing the Florida Fire Prevention Code (NFPA 1/ NFPA 101), NFPA 13, and/or NFPA 72.
  • Must be a high school graduate or possess a GED acceptable to the District. An Associate’s Degree from an accredited college or university in Fire Science Technology, Engineering, Architecture, Public Administration, or a related field is highly desirable.
  • Considerable knowledge of Florida Administrative Code, Florida State Statues, and other laws, rules, and regulations pertaining to fire prevention and building construction.
  • Regular, dependable attendance required.

COMPETENCY:

  • Excellent written and oral communications skills. Ability to read and interpret written documents, and the ability to understand and carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, supervisors, other employees, building owners, building occupants, craftsmen, contractors, architects, operators, and the general public.
  • Basic knowledge of mathematical concepts and calculations and ability to apply them to practical applications such as calculating hydraulic flow rates and measuring and calculating distances.
  • Ability to think and reason critically by defining problems, collecting data, establishing facts, and drawing valid conclusions.

POSITION SUMMARY:

Perform duties to review construction plans for compliance with the Florida Fire Prevention code, EPCOT building codes, and state codes, laws, and regulations relative to building construction, alteration, repair or maintenance, guided by precedent and working within the limits of established policies.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Review new plans, plan revisions, and plan amendments for conformance to applicable regulations and codes.
  • Consult architects, engineers, contractors, project managers and owners to assist in achieving permit submittal and code compliance.
  • Update and maintain the department’s permitting software.
  • Assist in the issuance of permits and perform field inspections as required.
  • Assist inspectors with plan inquiries during inspection processes.
  • Recommend code modifications.
  • Attend design review meetings as required to provide preliminary input to designers regarding upcoming projects.
  • Conducts inspections of structures, premises and processes for life and fire safety code compliance.
  • Acts and speaks on behalf of the Fire Marshal and the Fire Official.
  • Attends training sessions, seminars, and schools as directed.
  • Other duties as assigned.

DRIVING REQUIREMENTS:

  • Must possess a valid Florida State Driver’s license and maintain eligibility under the District’s commercial vehicle program.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

  • While performing the duties of this job, an employee is regularly required to sit, stand, walk, touch, speak, hear, and see.  An employee is occasionally required to bend, kneel, reach, twist, carry, climb, push and pull.
  • An employee must lift and/or move small articles and occasionally lift objects up to 20 pounds.
  • An employee must demonstrate fine motor skills and to be able to operate vehicles and other equipment.
  • An employee is occasionally required to work in heat, cold and wet/damp conditions and to navigate uneven and/or outdoor terrain.
  • Certain positions may require work above ground or in enclosed spaces.
  • Certain positions may have requirements of 50 pounds maximum lifting with frequent lift/carry up to 20 pounds.
  • Positions requiring strength demands in the Heavy and/or Very Heavy category have detailed physical performance analyses available for review.

PAY:         Starting pay is $29.33 per hour, including FRS Retirement, fitness center, great medical and other perks.
